PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

When do the first milk teeth appear?

The eruption of the first teeth begins with the lower teeth at approximately 6 months of age. Around the age of 3, all teeth are completed and it is expected that there will be 20 teeth in the mouth.

Does early or late eruption of milk teeth cause problems?

Genetic factors are important during tooth eruption in babies. If there is no other underlying disease, it is not a problem for healthy babies to have their teeth erupt early or late.

Late eruption of teeth is often related to premature birth, low birth weight or low vitamin D levels. If an 18-month-old baby’s milk teeth have not yet erupted, it is recommended that he or she go to the dentist for an examination. Babies who get their milk teeth late are expected to get their permanent teeth late as well.

Does early teething mean that they will decay quickly?

If babies’ teeth come out early, the risk of tooth decay increases relatively since oral care will be more difficult. When the teeth first appear, a dentist’s examination is required at regular intervals thereafter.

What should you pay attention to when coming to the dentist with your child for the first time?

It is very important that your child’s first visit to the dentist is for the purpose of meeting and checking, without any pain.

  • Do not reward your child with gifts or similar things after the procedure.
  • It is important to make motivational sentences before coming to the appointment. It is more accurate to say, “I believe you can do it,” rather than saying things like, “Don’t be afraid, it won’t hurt you.”
  • When your child misbehaves, do not scare your child with sentences such as “I’ll give you an injection” or “Uncle/aunt doctor will get angry with you” and do not let anyone scare you.
  • To avoid conflicting information between the family and the dentist, leave it to the dentist to provide information about the procedures to be performed.
  • You can make the situation sympathetic by playing doctor before you go.
  • Do not bring your child to the dentist after long and busy school days. A child who is normally very adaptable may react differently when tired.

What are the protective practices applied to children?

Fissure sealant:It is the coating of these areas with a fluid filling material in order to prevent the accumulation of food in the recessed areas of the molars that are susceptible to decay. It does not have any harm or side effects. It ensures that risky areas on the upper surface of the tooth, which may require filling, are protected from decay. After it is made, it requires regular control in case it falls or breaks.

Flour: These are varnishes or gels applied to strengthen the enamel of the teeth against the formation of caries. Contrary to the news on social media and society, it does not harm health if applied correctly. Since its effectiveness lasts between 4-6 months, it is necessary to repeat it at regular intervals. The application does not cause any trauma to the child. Do not eat or drink anything for 1 hour after the application. It is necessary to stay away from milk and dairy products for 24 hours.
